I posted this to a similar problem earlier. It explains why a bad battery
could cause problems.

It sounds like the battery is so far gone that when you boot up, the power
manger inside the Duo is overworked. It's job is to provide power to the Duo
so that it can run. It also has to provide power to the battery to charge
it. If the battery is to far gone it puts such a load on the power manager
that there isn't enough juice left for the Duo itself to continue powering
up. Hence it goes dark (shuts off).
