Well, can you use an external modem via the serial port? I would check
the following:
1.) You do not have the Express Modem software set to imitate the
Modem/Printer port
2.) Set AppleTalk to "Remote Only"
3.) Check for Fax software or Palm Hotsync on your machine.
I doubt it is one of the above, b/c you would get a "port busy" or
som,ething similar error.
4.) You can try disabling the Express modem. (If you don't normally use
it is should give you a minor speedup and save battery life...)
5.) Try printing to a different printer if you have one.
6.) Do a clean system install and see if that works. This involves the
following steps:
1.) Rename your current System Folder and remove either the System
or Finder file to the root of your hard disk.
2.) Install a new, clean installation in a completely new System
folder (That's why we renamed the old one...)
3.) Test the printer.
4.) If it worked, you can use the new system folder, but you might
have to move some of your old Control panels or extensions. Reinstall
the express modem software, etc. If it didn't work, you can delete the
new System folder and use the old one. Rename the old one "System
Folder" and drop in the missing System or finder file. (Make sure that
the old folder is "blessed" before you restart, though. (If the system
folder has a generic folder icon, it is not blessed. If the control
panels, extensions, etc folders don't have their custom icons, that is
also a sign that the system folder isn't blessed.) Normally opening and
closing a non-blessed System Folder will make the computer realize that
it is a valid system folder.
