Well, here's a thought. I have an original Apple 15" LCD Studio Display. Now that
Apple has come out with the less expensive line digital ones, you can pick up one of
the original B&W/ADB for less than you'd pay for a new CRT on eBay. Unfortunately,
you have to use a video card in order to use it with the dock.* You can pick up a
used Duo Dock II or Plus for under $40 on eBay. It has built-in Ethernet. So, for the
cost of a new CRT monitor, you could have all the beauty of an LCD. Plus, these early
ones were the only Apple monitors that had external video input, so you can use it as
a TV screen or for watching DVDs! In addition, when you do upgrade to a new
PowerBook, you'll need a monitor with a VGA connection in order to use video spanning
or mirroring. All new Apple monitors are incompatible with PowerBooks (dumb huh?). It
will even work on new ADC desktops with a VGA PCI card.

Having said that, it may work with your Duo Dock I using the the dock's monitor port
with the proper $10-$20 video adapter, so you don't have to buy anything else. It has
a sych problem which causes the image to be green using Apple's adapter. This can be
taken care of with a DIP switch type adapter to allow you to manually route the
signals where they are supposed to be going that Apple's universal automatic adapter
does not understand (the Quadra's may need this as well). It does require a PPC to
use the display software to control the monitor from your desktop. which the 2300 IS,
however, the Quadra's will have to be adjusted via the monitor's built-in control
panel.

*THE ARGUMENT IN FAVOR OF A VIDEO CARD: Millions of colors @ 1024x768 (the LCD native
resolution)

All else aside ... any PC/old Apple VGA (or Mac monitor connector) style monitor will
work with the Duo Dock. They may require a video adapter as discussed, but any new
VGA monitor is going to require one anyway.
