It's possible.  A few people mentioned in comp.sys.mac.portables that after
getting the Duo back from authorized Apple repair service, there was a black
tape on top of the rear expansion connector. Also when I checked my Duo 230
logic board after I took it apart for another work, I saw there was less than
a millimeter of insulation between the battery contact and the magnesium
frame.

I think when Apple tried to make the Duo series as small as possible, they
introduced an unanticipated risk.
