WOW! For a manufacturer this news is really HUGE and SERIOUS. If we recall
Powerbooks in the past were delayed because one or two batteries caught
fire, and if we are to believe the recent Apple recall of certain G3
adapters was made because of six fires, then having the computer itself
catch fire is a much bigger and more serious problem. A fundamental design
flaw would necessitate a recall of the entire line and not just some
external, replaceable item.
No joking, I'd suggest posting this news to the much more widely read and
influential Powerlist and checking with the user base there--unless Apple
has required you to maintain silence (which doesn't seem to be the case
here). This should be publicly monitored--it is not a case of preserving
profits or good PR for Apple. The idea of battery powered spontaneous
combustion, say underway on a flight, is pretty scary--for the implications
and liabilities. (Which of us hasn't had a Powerbook occasionally turn on
when we thought we'd put it to sleep or shut it down)? In fact, it was so
extraordinary, I think you would have been well within bounds to insist on
an exchange for a G4-Ti, without the slightest semblance of "blackmail".
Based on your experience, that would be a prudent and justified request.
