I don't have any experience with the VST firewire cases, but if it is 
one of the thin ones that uses a 2.5" drive, I would recommend that you 
drop the Dead notbook computer's drive in the external case and plug it 
in to the new windows machine and just go. www.vsttech.com should be 
able to answer your questions as far as drivers go.

PS: Obviously, if this is a 3.5" external enclosure, forget it. It's 
technically possible, but would only complicate things more.
