I did a lot of experimenting and testing on my 2300 about the same questions
this summer. The difference in startup time between 8.1 and 8.6 was
insignificant... they both booted in just about the same amount of time.
Granted, my 2300 has 56 mb of RAM, so that might make 8.6 work better on my
machine.
Nevertheless, the answer for me was 8.6. It was every bit as quick, and I
like the features better (especially Sherlock).
