I use my 2400/silver orinoco with an ibook/airport card set up as  a base
station and it works reliably...my cable modem plugs into the ibook so it is
stationary....just the orinoco in the 2400...I can go pretty much anywhere
with it and have good reception...

The previous post handled these questions...you only need the airport
software, no orinoco software...it is automatically recognized as an airport
card.

I could not get it to work with 8.6, so I upgraded to 9.1...but maybe others
have had better luck

Yes

You really just need the orinoco card as the computer will only recognize
one card at a time as far as an ethernet card goes...
