I use my 2400c with an Airport base station too... but I also have an 
iMac available that I use to configure and manage the base station 
with.

Yes it should work with 8.6. IIRC the Base Station first shipped 
around the same time as OS 9 came out, so the software, at least 
early versions, support 8.6.

I know that my iMac ran 8.6 at the time I bought the base station.

Yes. You should be able to make even the initial connection to the 
base station wirelessly.

You can do that too, but it is not required.

Since I have the iMac I never had to go through the tomeviewer 
gyrations, so I can fill that part in for you, but I bet somebody
