Any ATAPI (IDE) CD-ROM or CD-RW drive should be bootable. Most SCSI 
drives should also work (Apple-branded or no), but the only way to 
find out for a particular one is to try. I'm not certain about USB, 
but it probably works too (sloooowly :).

The best way to test the theory is to use a pressed Mac OS CD that's 
known to boot your computer. The 9.2 disc thus won't work for the 
2400, but anything from 7.6.1 to 9.1 should. Either select the drive 
in the Startup Disk control panel, or use the "C" or 
command-option-shift-delete boot modifiers while restarting the 
machine.
