Any ATAPI (IDE) CD-ROM or CD-RW drive should be bootable. Most SCSI drives should also work (Apple-branded or no), but the only way to find out for a particular one is to try. I'm not certain about USB, but it probably works too (sloooowly :). The best way to test the theory is to use a pressed Mac OS CD that's known to boot your computer. The 9.2 disc thus won't work for the 2400, but anything from 7.6.1 to 9.1 should.
