According to here
http://www.cooc.de/softies/ipodfreefileaccess/index.html
there is a freeware way of transferring iTunes to the iPod via Firewire.
It was written to work with 8.6 but has not been tested. I don't have
firewire on either of my computers. I had hoped to create the files on the
imac, transfer them to the 2400, then to the ipod via the firewire
conversion. Unfortunately, I don't know if the 2400 cardbus conversion is
powered (suppose not), but jeeze louise i'm tempted to give it a try via one
of the methods suggested by Allie --or is it Ralp?-- (below))
