I did this recently, with a 10 gig drive I had salvaged from a 3400 on
its way to the Dumpster at work.

Funny. I didn't have to do this. Both the old (original 1.1 GB) and
new hard drives were IDE...

Zip-ties work, but can be *extremely* difficult to thread through the
small screw-holes in the mounting bracket and worse, the hard drive
itself. Also, it is nearly impossible to get both brackets lined up
right when you're using wires to tie them in place. What I found to be
the easiest solution when I encountered this problem was to go to the
office supply store and buy the thinnest double-sided foam tape I could
find. Stick it to the brackets, then peel off the wax-paper and stick
the brackets onto the sides of the hard drive. It still may be a very
tight squeeze, but you can be guaranteed it will never fall out of place!
Good luck, and have a happy annual orgy of misguided, reckless
consumerism!
