Now that I start to own a few USB and FW devices, I found that carrying them is a real hassle in my briefcase. The devices are generally small (e.g., card readers, extra FWHDD, iMic), but their cords are averaging 6 feet in length.
Since my ibook and comet have all the ports on either one side or near the side (cardbus slot), these devices don't need cords longer than an inch or three. Has anyone tried cutting them and resolder/reshield them into shorter lengths? The USB seems to have only 4 conductors, and the FW has only 6. Seems like cake walk to me, especially after a recent surface mount fuse replacement on the Comet. Any surprise that maybe in store if I perform surgery on these cords?
