Tho, I would not try this if I were you. The plugs are usually molded on. The pins are spaced much tighter than what connectors were in the "old days" (5 years ago), and finally the wires may be litz wire which I've never been able to solder with a soldering iron. I don't know how they do it. The result of all this is that the resulting connections will be unreliable. And if you're carrying this stuff around in a case, it gets enough abuse, bending and mechanical stress that you need all the reliability you can get. I think you'll be sorry in the long run if you try this. There are some things in life that we just have to live with. Get a bigger case.
