I have twice in the past had the situation where i have had a battery icon with an X
through it on a powerbook duo 230

Both times i resolved the situation by resetting the power manager see.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?orig=til&artnum=14449#faq6

I only had to do step 1 to get rid of the X through the battery.

Sometimes i have had to do step 1 (press and hold the reset button for say a minute
then release) twice in a row.ie press and hold a minute then release then
consecutively press and hold a minute and release.

hope this helps
