Good Morning everyone
I have been mulling over the pros and cons of the upgrade to a
500-600 mhz G3 at $500 dollars.

The new ibook is small and powerful, but it doesn't
hold any desirability for me . Maybe it is because of it's rather bland
design , or it's choice of finish and color.
As I think of the reasons that
I decided to get a 2400, one has to be it's exclusivity. I cannot speak
for anyone else, but for me the fact that not everyone has a 2400 is a
real point of pride for myself. I love the reaction I get from people up
here, in the great white north, when I pull out my 2400. It would be
these reactions and the fact that I can add it to whatever I am carrying
and not feel burdened by it's size and weight. This weight and size factor
would prompt me to upgrade the 2400. This said. Let's face it an
iBook is only slightly bigger and slightly heavier. In
My opinion these differences aren't great enough to keep me from
substituting the 2400 with an iBook. The reasons , for me ,are more
personal ones .
Such as:
 More professional looking ( don't laugh )
Sexy design... All those lovely curves
 Exclusivity ( not everyone owns a 2400 )
Less valuable which enables me to tinker without great financial risk.
 Old school apple technology ,adb,scsi,
floppy drive (allot of my clients still use these things professionaly)
PCMCIA slots This is probably the biggest reason. If the iBook had
a PCMCIA slot, I would have re-painted it and taken out a mortgage
to own one if I had to.
recent drop in value that allows me to replace broken parts at a
   reasonable cost.
For me , speed was never an issue. I come from a graphic design point
of view .The first Mac I used was a IIfx . Ten thousand Canadian with
no ram added and slow as molasses in December. The fastest new computer
I've ever owned was the PPC 9600/200 tower. At this point I was more
than happy with the speed, Even in photoshop. I bought this machine a
few years before I went back to school
At work I use a G4 tower running at 400 mhz. Yup it's fast, feels like
light speed compared to the 2400. but I am doing very day to day
things with my 2400 . I surf the net , answer emails, work out my finances,
track my billable work hours., type letters and bring up photoshop and illustrator
files to look at and show clients. The 603 processor is more than enough for
all of this. I have considered a G3 upgrade for the 2400 but they are still too
expensive for my shallow pockets. As for the ram limitations, I do agree with
Sydney Ho, who wrote:

The bigger problem is that even on desktops
with 512 mb - 1 gb ram, keeping 20 programs from bumping into each other in
a stable stack for prolonged operations is somewhere between tough and
impossible. I defy those having 512 mb - 1 gb ram to show they really need
it and use it efficiently--unless they are doing Photoshop and animation all
day in which case this forum is not the right place.

My G4 has 500 mb of ram, OS 9.2 and I rarely go to 180 megs at any given time.
Even when creating wire frames for 3d rendering.

All of this said I would pay $300 U.S. ($480 Canadian) for a 500 mhz G3 upgrade
It is always nice to have the speed, and this is a reasonable price to me.
Any more and it's upgrade to an iBook time.

For everyone's info I also have a G3 pismo that My company gave me to carry
around. I leave it at home and carry the 2400 . My boss is OK with this only
because I am always taking things home (on a firewire external drive) to work on.
I've put the 400mhz powerbook up against a Titanium powerbook 400mhz both
running 9.1 and there is no noticeable difference except on altivec enhanced
operations.

Time to go to work.

Cheers
Carlos
