Even though this is a couple of weeks after he wrote to answer my
questions in detail, I want to give public thanks to Rob Talevski from
Melbourne, Australia, who helped me (successfully!) link up my Duo 210 and
my iMac, via a Newer Technology Ethernet Microdock. It was the very
model of clarity and patience, giving me a step by step checklist that
got
me to where I could zip the files back and forth. What are ethernet
speeds, by the way, between 2 machines... compared, say, to modem speeds?
Anyway, I was impressed.

A few observations:
(1) I set up separate extension sets for doing this, so that the various
file-sharing, users-and-groups, and networking extensions and control
panels and permissions were all in place... and I can switch them off
(save some ram, and maybe speed) when I'm not interested in doing the file
transfers or program sharing.

(2) The iMac seems to have an un-trashable "Shared folder" that is the
only thing I can see from the Duo side, when the iMac is the server. It
was a bit of a drag (!) to have to drag files I wanted to transfer into
that particular spot. But then, I put an alias of the hard drive into the
folder, and (first time, at least) I was then able to see all my contents.

(3) Highlighting the iMac drive icon and doing "get info" brings up a
sharing sub-menu, but that's not there on the Duo, which is running sys
7.6. However, the control strip on both machines seemed to do the same
thing, in terms of invoking the file-sharing set-up screen. And, I think
one could go directl to control panels to accomplish the same thing for
setting up sharing.

(4) I repeatedly couldn't get one machine to recognize the name and
password of the other... and somehow couldn't bypass the password
requirement. But I finally figured out that if one machine used the OTHER
machine's name and password, rather than its own, it could get in. Funny.

(5) As well as I can reconstruct, the step that Rob outlined which I
had neglected had to do with using the Appletalk control panels, and
setting both machines to "ethernet" rather than "remote only" or "AOL link
enhanced".

Again, to express my enthusiasm and sense of camaraderie about this list,
and what a valuable set of resources are embodied in its participants.

                        Thanks, Rob. Thanks, list!

                                                -DHF
