Keep in mind that the downloadable 8.1 is just an updater, it is not the
full install. It can only be used to update 8.0 to 8.1.

I had a 3400 (not 2400) 603ev @ 180 MHz with 48M ram and I used 8.1
Netscape 4.7 and it all worked fine. OS 8.1 used around 7 or 8 meg ram
(Virtual Memory on) as I recall. Later I installed 8.5 (CD required, not
downloadable) then updated it to 8.6 with the downloadable updater. That
used a bit more ram but there is still plenty of room for Netscape.

I think your plan for the friend's 2400 is good. I don't see any
problems. I used my setup to do my banking, order online etc.
