I've had yellowdog and linuxppc running quite happily although I 
haven't managed to get the PCMCIA cards working (may just be my 
machine - it's a little flakey in the card department). An external 
modem does the job fine for net stuff... The yellowdog installer is 
probably better for a 1st timer though, with a much nicer 
partitioning interface than linuxppc...

NetBSD is another viable choice, although the installation process is 
complicated enough to give most people (myself included) a queasy 
feeling in the pit of my stomach...

Anyway, if you want to try linux, I'd say give yellowdog a try - just 
download the 2.2 iso image and burn it to a CD for a low effort
