I believe it's more of a partition problem. I could be wrong as I've only 
done SCSI disk mode with a 520, but SCSI disk moding partitions over 4 gigs 
can cause file corruption.

As for Appletalking, you could, but with serial you're talking about 
230kbps and even 10Base-T ethernet at10mbps is right around 1 Megabyte per 
second with some overhead. With SCSI disk mode you're going to get 5-10 
megabytes a second, depending on conditions and throughput and other such 
things. Even at it's worst SCSI disk mode is noticably faster than 
Ethernet. With 100Base-T ethernet you might be able to beat it, though even 
then it's iffy with the protocol overhead of Appletalk.
