This used to happen to me. I don't recall what the proper work-a-round would be, but here is one solution that worked for me (while using my NEC MultiPlex 6X SCSI Drive.) Boot up your 2400 with the macos 8.5 or 9 CD in the SCSI drive and it will show up on your desktop. Once you are booted eject the CD and insert whatever CD you need.
