Expect the FireWire drive to be slower than the SCSI drive. Every
FireWire DVD-RAM out there is just an IDE drive attached to a
FireWire bridge.

DVD-RAM's are slow slow slow! No matter what bus you put it on (SCSI,
IDE or FireWire) My DVD-RAM is gathering dust on a shelf, I'm only
keeping it around incase one of the clients I gave a DVD-RAM needs me
to work with one again.

For backup, I would suggest investing in a used DTL (Digital Linear
Tape) tape drive. A 10 gig (20 gig hardware compression) version can
be had on eBay for around $100 and used tapes are around $7.

I got a DLT drive a year ago and it been great. I used to use DAT, it
was horribly slow, but no where near as slow as my DVD-RAM.

My average Retrospect backup speed is around 120megs per min backing
up MPEG2 video files that don't compress at all. If with files that
compress well, I've seen it hit 300megs per min. Worst I ever saw was
50megs a minute backing up my 2400c over Airport! (not bat at all)
All with a drive that cost $80! And I've never had a problem.

So unless you have a significant investment in piles of DVD-RAM
discs, take a look into DLT.

If you have any other questions about DLT, drop me a line.
