I did manage to get the Duo to see the ethernet adapter by (imagine
this.....) reinstalling the Asante driver!

but...

I still can't get the book to connect to my home network via a hub.
Suffice to say that I do know that the network-side is set up correctly
(I have two other machines up and running and able to see each other,
transfer files, etc.). I will individually test the pieces of said
puzzle tonight.

I believe that the adapter functions properly; all the LED's light and
blink the way that they should. I really can't think of a method I could
use to test the adapter (other than getting the Duo to connect to the net!).

When I try to switch the Appletalk connection method in the Appletalk
control panel, the book seems to try to initialize the connection; there
is a short pause...... and then I get the error message "There was an
error when attempting to use Alternate Ethernet" and then the setting
defaults back to "printer port".

I have tried using four different enet cables, all with the same results
so, I believe the problem does not lie there.

By the way, what version number is the most current driver? I think I
have the latest. Also, how are the switches on the adapter set in your
setup?
Thanks for the info,

Mike
