It has been a very long time, but I recall having that initially too (on my
280c).  But I *think* (can't promise this was what did the trick) that I
just went to VersionTracker & looked up all the updated components to my
version of the OS.  I forget if it was the updated Open Transport or the
something else that fixed it.

For OS 8.1, the most up-to-date stuff is listed at:
