Is it possible to replace the motherboard of a 280c with that of a 2300?
Yes

If yes, is it difficult?
Not particularly. You do have to essentially disassemble it completely, but as far as laptops go it's fairly easy to do.

If yes, any advice beyond the obvious?
See below -

Is the memory the same, for instance? The PRAM battery the same? What could
I take from my 280 and put in the 2300?
Everything is the same, the board will drop right in.

Is it possible to switch screens? (I ask all these because I often see
screens and other Duo parts for sale cheaper than buying a 2300 to replace
my 280c...)
You can use every possible screen on a 2300 board, but the 2300-specific screen will only work on a 2300.

The advice: Unless you have some PPC specific program, don't do it. The 2300 is actually slower in a lot of functions than the 280c. Even just moving around the Finder and such is slower. If you're just wanting e-mail, word processing, maybe a little web, you'd be better to stick with a 280c.

The 2300(c) is a PPC, however, and also supports IDE drives. If you have some specific bit of software to run, then go ahead. Otherwise I'd make sure you really want to do it. I use my 280c far more than my 2300c.
