I have owned a PB 2400 for 20 months. I have always carried it in a
Targus CN20 subnotebook carrying case.

It has died and been repaired by AppleCare 3 or 4 times. Until the last
repair, about 2 months ago, it would usually crash and need to be
restarted once every week or two.

Prior to this repair, I had only one piece of foam in the case, along the
bottom edge (where the ports are). After the last repair, I cut out a
large "U" shaped piece of foam which protects the powerbook on the sides
as well as the bottom. It is about 1 inch thick around the bottom (where
the ports are) and about 3/4 inch thick around each side. I have lined
my Targus carrying case with this.

Reliability is much improved. In the last 2 months, I have had no system
crashes, and only restarted twice. Once it shut down once while sleeping
(I think that the battery went too low even to support sleep), and one
time an application started acting funny so I restarted.

Apple reported this last repair as "reseated CPU". Unless they
implemented some kind of hardware upgrade which made the machine more
rugged, it appears that the additional foam in my carrying case is
responsible for my improved reliability, and I recommend this to anyone
who suffers from frequent crashes.
