Actually, I do and have done nearly all of those things regularly on five
different Macs since 1992, and I have encountered no problems whatsoever.
Perhaps I am just fortunate, but this is the first time I have ever heard
anyone say not to do them. In fact, I recall Macworld or MacUser dishing out
similar advice some time ago...
