I believe there are a few things which slow it down on wake up which you
can fix. One, I believe is AppleTalk. If this is on in the chooser it
slows things down. Another is if you have "Servers" checked in the
"Remember recent items" in the AppleMenu Control Panel. There was another
one I think, but I'm not sure about this. Mac Secrets is a good source of
this kind of data.
Also 8.6 seems slower on waking than any previous system. But wake up
from sleep is still faster than starting it up after a shutdown.
I never tried the fan though! That's a very interesting idea!
