This is all consistent with my behavior with the same
computer/cards/OS version (I didn't think there was another person in
my exact situation). To eject the card, turn off Appletalk. I have a
Location Manager setting which turns AppleTalk to Remote Only when I
am on the road. You can (with some effort) hook up an applescript to
your Location manager setting so the card is automatically ejected. I
did this for my wife's Powerbook, but haven't done it for mine yet.
