An expensive, but very effective option with lots of side benefits is
to install the G3/320 upgrade. My machine now runs much cooler -- fewer
watts of power go into the G3 so less heat comes out. Of course, you
get a snappier machine (the memory bandwidth & disk become the limiting
factors); the battery lasts longer, too.
I haven't seen such win/win reviews of the G3/240 upgrades. However,
s/w can help: "G3Strip" allows pretty savvy tradeoffs between power
(CPU 'horsepower') and power (battery/heat). Its feature that lets me
power off the cache when on battery seems to be an important part of
the cooler operation and longer battery life I now enjoy.
