in
threes! It was looking very sorry for itself, but I have done much work on
it and it now functions.

Neither top nor back power switches work - are they both meant to operate on
the same internal switch? If so, it is not there. Therefore I eventually
had to get it to boot in my Dock, eject it (which you are not supposed to do
while it is running!) and put it to sleep, rather than shutdown. There must
be a way around this.

But the other enduring problem is that some of the keys do not work. I have
taken the keyboard apart and it seems as though it functions by means of
forcing two electronic tracks together, bits of which have been worn away.
Does anyone know if it is fixable, by painting conductive paint on the
reduced areas? >>

sounds like the modem or power card that holds the switch is bad, and if you
can find another modem, you might find that it will give you the powering up
that you need without docking the unit. Since the modem card has a
passthrough to powering up the laptop, that would be my guess as to the
malfunction.
good luck
