In my experience, the virtual memory handling from System 8 is so much
better that there is no reason to use RAM Doubler. So, any extra memory
the System appears to take is compensated for. I do think 7.6.1 was a
good system, but there are many features in 8.1 which make it superior.
Incidentally I helped a friend recently install software on his first
computer - a second hand PowerMac 6100. The machine was very cheap - 200
dollars including modem, but only had 16 megs of RAM. Just to see what
would happen, I loaded System 8.6 on it and it ran beautifully. MUCH,
much snappier than the original 7.5.5 that the machine came with.
I'd definitely go with 8.6 if it were my machine. The memory management
alone is worth the upgrade. I noticed a full 20 minutes or so difference
in battery life on my 2400c PowerBook after installing 8.6.
Yours sincerely,
John Davis
