The next step is to mark strings for translation (i.e. surround them
with "_()"). Later, these strings are extracted to a "master" message
catalog which can be translated to various languages.

You actually make copies for each language, named "<langcode>.po", and
edit them. Then you "compile" them with a special tool, and install the
resulting binary message catalogs (*.mo or *.gmo) in the appropriate
place. I still have to figure out how to do all that with scons.

The "Qt problem" should already be solved by the hooks I added the other
day. They disable Qt's own translation mechanism and enable the more
widely used gettext() method instead.
