My default is to lock everything, with a few posts made public or filtered. When something is filtered, I note that in the subject. If it's something that's open to, say, "friends of x so we can plan something", I note that in the text. Sometimes I use LJ as a messenger service, and filter to one person, or a couple people, and I note that in the text. I've found it very simple, effective, and easy.
