Title: "Kosovo to declare statehood in months"
Could be, but this one isn't quite as simple as
some others. Kosovo is presently part of
Serbia, which strongly objects to releasing it.
So the UN is already involved, and the end
result is presently looking like some sort of
autonomy - "independence-lite". Whether that
will qualify for a UN seat and/or ITU prefix
block, and hence separate DXCC status, remains to be seen. Stay tuned,
From the article: "Senior western diplomats say
the province will make its move and be
recognised as independent by European Union and
Nato countries once a United Nations resolution
about its future expected to stop short of
granting independence is agreed." And that's
the key. If the UN recognizes it as
independent, then 338 is on the books <g>. I
suspect it will be a long time for this one.
But the U.S. is a NATO country. :-)
Presumably if the U.S. were to recognize it as
independent, Kosovo would then appear on the U.S.
Department of State's list of "Dependencies and
Areas of Special Sovereignty" as having a local
"Administrative Center." That would qualify it as
political entity under DXCC Rule 1. c) regardless of what the U.N. did.
