Interesting because it is different from the way it used to be. I agree that this is a discussion group and as such, the default reply should be to the group.
Private discussions should not be the default. I find the routine of a message being posted asking a question, then a short time later a subsequent message posted that says thanks for the help in resolving the problem, and no intermediate messages stating what the solution was - somewhat frustrating. Perhaps, this default will allow more sharing of information.
