Here is something to take into consideration when dealing with overall performance issues with anyone's computer/laptop.
First, some background. I've been servicing computers for quite a number of years now, regardless of the fact that I've been in IT for 28 years. I have seen first hand that machines will slow down for any one or more reasons. In general: 1) Corrupted OS due to viruses/spyware 2) extra garbage in registry 3) disk fragmentation 4) not enough system resources (memory/disk) I will take these one at a time: 1) If you spend more than 30 seconds on the internet chances are you may get infected with viruses/spyware. These tend to cause all sorts of performance issues. Make sure you are running good AV/AS software. Also, DON'T OVER-PROTECT yourself. Often times I've seen people put 2 or 3 AV/AS software programs "just to be safe". This can cause major performance issues. You can run a free scan/cleaning from www.ewido.com. Works very good for free! 2) If you are like me, there are many times where I've installed/un-installed/reinstalled all sorts of stuff. The uninstallers are not that good and will keep things in your system registry. There are 2 utilities that I use that cleans most of that mess up. Registry Mechanic and CCleaner. Download these and run them often to tidy things up. 3) Disk fragmentation comes from every day use. If you go into Windows Explorer and find your C: drive, right mouse click C: drive/left mouse click on Properties, then left mouse click on the Tools tab then left mouse click on Defragment Now. This process take quite a bit of time but is worth it in the long run. 4) System resources. First hard disk space. Make sure you have not used more than 70% of your HDD space. Clean out temp files and other non-essential files. Second memory. If you are running Windows XP your system will be happy with at least 1 gb of memory. Windows Vista is best running at 2gb of memory. If you have less memory your machine spends a lot of time memory/disk thrashing.... as in runs slow! I have been running DX4WIN for quite a number of years (probably going on 10). It is a very stable system and will perform with the least amount of system resources. It is up to you to keep a good home for your version of DX4WIN. If it is a mess then don't expect miracles. 73; Kurt - W2MW --- wo2n <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > RR Tnx, seems quite the DXHog, hi. > I'm running a GHZ of Memory. > 73, Bernie/WO2N.> > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Erkki Heikkinen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Tuesday, March 04, 2008 1:14 AM > Subject: RE: [Dx4win] CPU Usage > > > > Bernie, > > > > It happens here, too. ADIF is better than Cabrillo for import as it's more precise about modes. I always import into a blank database, then fix the mistakes, and only then import the new database into my main one. Safer that way! So the task to generate CW runs at a higher priority and does not give up control on a voluntary basis resulting in a high CPU usage. I simply hope to produce better CW this way. Note also that some tasks, like making a backup, updating the worldmap and processing dx spots wait until the CW generation is finished. --Paul wo2n wrote: > RR Tnx, seems quite the DXHog, hi.
