With Vista I have user accounts turned off, but a few weeks ago for
some reason I turned it on and found that DX4WIN came up with the
same ports message. Turned user accounts back off and DX4WIN came
back fine. Made me wonder if Win 8 has a user accounts control that
is turned on, but if so I can't find it or how to turn it off.
I assume you mean "User Account Control" which is art of Windows
security to prevent programs from writing (or deleting) data that
they should not. I too disabled UAC in Vista because the Vista
version was so buggy. However, it is not possible to disable UAC
in Windows 8 - but I have not found any reason to do so.
I do a couple things - DX4Win (the public demo) is installed in a
separate directory that is *not* in C:\Program Files or C:\Program
Files (x86). I install all of my amateur software in C:\Ham Programs
(C:\Ham would work as well). In addition, I run C:\Ham Programs\DX4Win\
lptdriver *one time as administrator* after installation and then I
run DX4Win *as administrator* the *first time only* so it can create
any necessary files in protected areas of the file system.
I do the same with other amateur software that requires access to
system hardware (serial ports, parallel ports, etc.) and have never
had an access problem through multiple installs on Windows 7 and
Windows 8 (including wipe the hard drive and reinstall situations
that I occasionally encounter due to misbehaved software).

Hi Joe. Thanks for your information. I've been using DX4WIN since way back with
several versions of windows, never had any previous problems. With Vista I have

computer knowledge is limited............
Thanks again for your always helpful advice.

I don't know if the new version of DX4WIN has been upgraded to
function with Win 8, but it sounds like maybe not. I suggest you
talk to the DX4WIN guys about the problem. I checked the DX4WIN
user group a while back and did not find any info on DX4WIN with
Win 8. I continue to use my old version on my PC with Vista.
There have been no changes in the way Windows handles serial ports
between Vista and Windows 8. Any serial application that works with
Vista or Windows 7 should function without change in Windows 8.
Windows 8 is, at its core, Windows 7 with a new "touch based" user
interface.

Murray, I have not been able to use an older version of DX4WIN with

other person has been having the same problem. I don't know if the new

upgraded, if not I will go to another logging program.

Subject: [Dx4win] Comports
I have recently purchased DX4WIN 8.05 and a new computer with Windows 8. I
have a Pro 756III and connect it to the computer using a CT17. My problem is
that I cannot get the radio and computer to recognize each. Whenever I open
DX4WIN i get the following message: i.e. Badid - specified comport doesn't
exist. I have tried changing the bauld rate and the comports without
success. I have contacted the technical arm of the computer seller to
confirm that the comports were activated and I was assured that they were as
factory default. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Murray
