Eric, This has stumped folks before. The short answer is there are NO counties in Alaska. SOME, but not all, areas of Alaska are organized as Boroughs. The problem is in sparsely settled areas of the bush the locals, who largely live on subsistence, don't want a Borough form of government because they have the power to levy taxes. Taxes have to be paid in cash, not fish or beaver pelts - soooo no local government, no local taxes!
This gives county hunters a problem because of the resulting area gaps in governmental units throughout bush Alaska. The solution is to use the geographical boundaries of the four Alaska State Court Judicial Districts. The Judicial Districts, 1st through 4th, are referred to by geographic area within the state - Central, North-West, South-Central, and South-East. I live in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough which is in the Third Judicial District and is referred to as South-Central Alaska. Les, KL7J, has a nice web page at www.qsl.net/kl7j/county.htm that describes the various areas and the Boroughs within each one. Scroll down to the bottom and he has a nice color map showing the Judicial District boundaries and the existing Borough boundaries. DXbase uses the geographic regions of Alaska in the county drop down list. However, if like me, you use a Callbook CD ROM lookup, DXbase populates the county field with info from the Callbook data base. I just entered my call in the log and it fills in the County field with "MATANUSKA-SUSITNA". When I enter KL7J the County field is populated with "KENAI PENINSULA". "VALDEZ CORDOVA" is also a Borough name. The Borough names are NOT listed as any of the predefined County areas within DXbase. I suspect LOTW is looking for the geographic area term for County rather than the Borough name. This means all your AK contacts will have to have the County entry modified if you used a Callbook CD ROM to populate this filed. Hope this helps. Now to go check my log for AK entries!
