Sorry to hear your problems.
This is tough to diagnose from outside your shack.
Couple of questions.

What kind of connection do you have, Broadband, DSL, Dialup?
Are you on  in-home network?
Are you using a router, what kind?

On the same machine, can you stay connected to the inet, such as a streaming 
video from 
CNN or some such.

What kind of computer, what OS?

The symptom of the window staying open, is normal. If you loose connection, the 
window 
will stay open, until you close it and reopen.

If you use some chat room software such as mIRC, to connect to the CQDX chat 
room, do you 
have loss of connection?
