Dick,
You described it acurately when you said "they work with varying
results". I had a couple of bad experiences using the Registry Clean-up
programs
and I'll never use one again. I also discovered when you are removing a
program and you get the prompt about a file may be used by another program
you
better not give permission to delete it.

Mike,
If you have your database backed up I wouldn't think it would be a big deal
at all. Just re-install DXBase and then copy your data bases back into the
program. I have heard a few "tales of woe" from those who have failed to
back up their mdb files, so at least you are not in that boat.
As far as Windows goes, I personally format my hard drive and do a fresh
install of Windows about once a year (or sooner if I notice programs running
abnormally slow). If you take this approach, delete all the programs you
don't want before installing DXBase again.
From what I have picked up from Windows Geeks is the registry file gets
full of "crap"; if one is a computer wizz, he would be able to go into the
registry and "clean it up"; unfortunately, I am not one!! Additionally,
there are programs sold at computer stores and online that will "clean up
your registry". I have heard they work with varying results, I have not
tried one yet as I don't find it that big of a deal to format the hard
drive and start over!
Good luck
