It might have something to do with the fact that contacts before 1975 aren't valid for CW-DXCC. Just for testing, I tried entering a CW contact with a 1974 date, and DXbase unchecked the Mode box in the "Valid" field when I saved the entry. My results were different than yours though, the contact didn't even show "W" in the Summary window.
