Hey Ruairi,
  I loaded your revised code an examples and had a few
problems.  
1 For some reason, I had to load the two files
individually instead of using the directory * method. 
Not sure what caused this.
2 I had to change your opacity.js code to use (is.ns6)
instead of (is.ns5) as the current snapshot version I
am using now uses this.
  Once changed, both examples ran under ns6.  Under
ie5.5, I cannot get it to change the opacity.  Do you
need to have any add-ons to IE to get the css opacity
filter working?
Looks like a fun effect widget though, look forward to
working more with it if I can get the ie version
going.
running under win98  ie5.5 and ns6.0
