Good point. Flash makes some things easy not having to write any code, but
you can't get all its power without writing a single line (I'm talking about
Flash 5). At last, you end having a movie with only one or two frames in the
timeline and a bunch of code in the actions panel. The guys of Macromedia
have been intelligent and adopted JavaScript (here called ActionScript) as
the flash programming language, to make easier for dhtml programmers to move
to Flash. I don't know if it's time to move definitively from dhtml to
flash, but I think we should see it as a valid alternative. What Flash
offers is a more stable and reliable support, maybe we will program in the
same way we are doing now with dhtml, but we won't have the troubles we have
building crossbrowser pages (don't you spend the half of the time of a
project just making pages work in both IE and Netscape browsers?). If the
end user has the plugin installed you know that the movie will work
(although at times its behaviour depends also of the browser version). Maybe
Microsoft and Netscape are fighting in sterile battles while Macromedia is
going to win the war... (btw, Macromedia and Allaire have joined, what will
happen with the most wonderful html editor you can imagine, HomeSite?).

~ The Online Flash Film Festival is currently being held in Barcelona.
~ World wide recognized Flash gurus show their works, give some speaks and
~ share their thoughts about the future of web designing and where are
~ things going. I'm attending some of the events ( hey, company is paying
~ and I got a cool bag ).
~
~ Ironicaly, while DHTMLs are tryning to move from notepad to Wysywig and
~ timelined web building, flashers are going down to dirty and dangerous
~ coding practices. Joshua Davies ( www.praystation.com ) talked about
~ abandoning the idea of linear movies and building systems, closed
~ environments where the programmer generates several items which react to
~ what happens close to them, and then let them evolve and move by
~ themselves.
~
~ Of course flash is best suitable for movies, but when it comes to webs
~ and interfaces, cutting-edge flashers are moving towards where we are:
~ having objects that react to certain events and are placed in a given
~ space, which is the web space. Lots of code has been shown, and little
~ timelines.
~
~ I can't help smiling at these things. Just so ironic.
