I'm compelled to respond.
Not that this is meant to "stir-the-pot" of debate as much as share some of
my thoughts on tools and tool users.
We're all "here" for a reason; I think the right reasons. Not that long ago
(a year) I evaluated where I wanted to go personally and what path would
best serve me in the context of allowing for the best education (and hence
tool set) possible for my future.
I based my decision on allot of things. The most important being:
1) What technologies and trends are driving the evolution of the
next-generation web? Web Objects, DOM, Moore's Law, Convergence, etc...
2) What peer group(s) best supports "these" trends.
3) What tool(s) best focus on "these" areas.
Hence, the DynAPI.
It's Open Source
It's object based and supports the DOM.
Its syntax mirrors Java and other forthcoming next-generation programming
languages.
The peer group is excellent, there are some "very" smart people involved
with this API.
It's based on GUI. Interface is all encompassing, it leads to everything
and hence your "educational exposure".
It's based on an ECMA approved client-side scripting language.
But most important of all, it's a continuing education on cross-browser
integration based on what actually drives an integrated broadly usable web
experience; the DOM.
FLASH is wondrous. This API embraces FLASH from the standpoint that you can
use it and use it well. FLASH is not the enemy (though FLASHERS tend to
take this limited viewpoint) it's part of "our" opportunity matrix. And our
Matrix is all encompassing, because it's based on the DOM.
The FLASH matrix is restrictive. It's based on a proprietary "EMBED OBJECT"
(two key problems with FLASH: embedded and proprietary). Please let me
choose my own destiny not the next version-x of a commercial software
package.
Enough of that...,
While were sharing, some key things that I've seen that are worth looking
into as supplements to "our" opportunity matrix.
1) Intel and Macromedia formed an alliance to integrate 3D API's into
Shockwave about a year ago. The results of this alliance are now starting
to appear.
Shockwave is based on Director's rendering engine and can move 30 FPS
compared to FLASH rendering a recommended 12 FPS. Also, Shockwave is an
extensible tool that allows developers to use it "trusted signature" to
extend it's capabilities with second-tier plug-ins.
I've been waiting for a tool that has broad penetration (200 million for
Shockwave) and taps the real power of a hardware accelerated PC and DirectX.
It's finally here! Steaming 3D animations integrated into a web page
leveraging Open-GL and hardware acceleration.
2) I found a really nice Open Source media streaming API called SurePlayer
(ALA Real Media, Media Player). Check it out, it's at
http://www.sureplayer.org/index.html. Worth keeping an eye on. Let you
integrate streaming MPEG video into a plug-in free. Nice.
Anyway, I've bantered long enough. Jordi sharing is good. We should all
pass pearl's of wisdom back and forth, it's what "community" is all about.
Stride on!
Raymond
