In short, Future compatibility.

XHTML is a stricter version of standard HTML. By complying to its rules
(which is not hard or to much extra work) you open a door for new types of
media to be able to present your content. Remember HTML was designed around
content. Not around formatting. In the not so distant future we will start
to see applications other than browsers that are able to parse XML
application including XHTML (which is really HTML reformulated as an XML
application). XHTML starts to blur the line between HTML and other markup
languages. Imagine a world, where you create content once, and are able to
open it in any application. It's a wonderful world! =;^)
