It would actually be nice to benchmark "#layers<->ram/platform" recommendations based user ram and pentium class startng at 200 as a low-water-mark. I've had good luck with 100ish layers on a 200-pentium class with 96mb ram. But most of the layers are used for content position and display formating only with maybe 5-12 layers having anything to do with actual HTML based content. I also use layer recycling. Also load layers based on "projected use", lots of layers are secondary and can be loaded at the end. Front loading "primary GUI layers and controllers" should be first.
