Microsoft was sued by the creators of Double-Space, and micros0ft settled.
Why? Microsoft wanted to use Double-Space in it's operating systems, but didn't
want to pay much for it (like Nutscrape). So, gates produced Drive-Space, based
on almost identical code. There was a patent on Double-Space technology and
Microsoft settled out of court because of it.
Gates only has to obey the law if he is pressed for it. There are several
reports (see Dr-DOS) about companies that have sued microsoft, and MS has
filed dozens of frivolous law-suits against the company to stop them from
suing them.
Rockefeller had to obey the law too.
Don't underestimate the power of a Monopoly.
