What's the version of your libpng? This happened to me too with some version
(I think 1.something, but can't be sure... They have the screwiest lib naming
scheme I've seen lately :P)... Anyway, I don't have this problem with libpng
0.96 (from an rpm). This is some kind of a transparency/shape problem.

A different version of libpng could fix all your problems. Also make sure
that your convert is linked to _the correct version_ of libpng:

        ldd convert
        ...
        libpng.so.0 => /usr/lib/libpng.so.0 (0x4015a000) [from my system]
        ...

(works for linux systems).
