Hey Randy,

I think I can recommend a book here, which at least helped me a lot:

X Window System Programming, 2nd Ed., by Nabajyoti Barkakati (no
mistyping here :), from the Unix Library series from SAMS Publishing.

It gave me enough knowledge to write decent mods for good ol' E13, which
I'm still using today ... The only bad thing about it I can think of is
its weight if you carry it in your backpack: 980 pages, 'nuff said :)
